Tribulations
1st June 2010
I was reminded recently of the story of Daniel's trial in the ‘Lions Den’. Darius, at that time being King of the Medo-Persian Empire decided to set one hundred and twenty Satraps (local leaders) over the affairs of his vast Kingdom. These Satraps were accountable to three Commissioners who themselves were answerable only to the King. Daniel, one of the three commissioners, full of the Spirit of God and wise above his fellow's the King thought to promote above all his servants.
However, full of envy and hatred towards Daniel, the two other Commissioners with the support of the Satraps set about to diligently search for any fault that they could accuse Daniel of before the King, this with the sole intention of displacing him from his position of power and authority. However, to their frustration no fault could be found to accuse Daniel before the King.
Daniel 6:5
Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
A common tactic of Satan is to bring God's law into conflict with Man's. Those who follow God will have to chose to either compromise His command or suffer tribulation. As legislation after legislation is passed that directly conflicts with God's Word Christians will have to make a choice as Bible based Christianity is slowly criminalized in the West.
Therefore these men, with full knowledge of Daniel's daily habit of worshiping and petitioning his God approached the King. With false adoration they requested that a law should be passed that for one month, if anyone should be found petitioning any god or man except the King, they should be thrown into the lion's den. Aware of this, Daniel as was his custom opened his windows wide and knelt down and worshipped God. Needless to say his adversaries soon approached the King to accuse Daniel of breaking their new law. Unable to change the law of the Medes and Persian's the King, although working tirelessly to secure Daniel's release was unable to free him, thus Daniel was cast into the lion's den.
John 11:40
Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" NIV
When I thought upon Daniel and pictured him in my mind's eye, I couldn't but wonder what kind of a man he was. Many of us will say “I trust in the Lord” but would we sit there like Daniel at peace trusting fully in our God or would we begin to doubt and fret then be found hysterically begging and screaming at the entrance? Eventually our faith will be made manifest as was Abraham's when told to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22:10-12). I think about many of the ancient battles I have read of where some with a total trust and obedience to their commander hold fast a thin line and so live, but still other accounts where others doubting and losing confidence in their leader break rank and run for their lives...thus the line breaks and a great slaughter ensues. Daniel's peace was acquired by trusting fully in His God and so he was able to enter into God's rest, a rest that can only be grasped through faith. But how can you have faith in Him who you do not know? Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" NIV
John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
A young boy when halted by a rickety bridge... nervous and unable proceed only needs to glance at his parents and with just one word or a nod will with full confidence cast all fear aside and march across the bridge, be it is safe or not. Why? because having faith in greater than he and knowing of their love for him he is freed from the limitations of fear. So how much more we who know Him who gave His Son for us and raised Him from the dead? Our God is a supernatural God who stretched out the Heaven's and laid the foundation of the Earth who says “let it be” and it is? These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Daniel 6:19-23
19 Then the king arose at dawn, at the break of day, and went in haste to the lions' den.
20 When he had come near the den to Daniel, he cried out with a troubled voice. The king spoke and said to Daniel, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you constantly serve, been able to deliver you from the lions?"
21 Then Daniel spoke to the king, "O king, live forever!
22 "My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths and they have not harmed me, inasmuch as I was found innocent before Him; and also toward you, O king, I have committed no crime."
23 Then the king was very pleased and gave orders for Daniel to be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den and no injury whatever was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. NASU
