The Trinity.
4th of April 2010

The Trinity - The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit - are one.

I do not pretend to have fully grasped the subject of the Trinity but have come to an understanding which I think I can cope with, I'm a simple person and have to break things down in a way that I can understand, I thought it might be helpful to share my thoughts on this subject.

As I have mentioned many times before, I have studied with most of the ‘Christian Cults’ and when these cults pointed out to me various Scriptures that related to the Trinity, I have to admit that I was almost persuaded that the doctrine of ‘The Trinity’ was a complete lie. One of the champions of this message today are the Jehovah's Witnesses, with other cults lowering the status of Jesus to differing degrees. Certain Scriptures were brought to my attention, Scriptures such as...
John 14:28
You heard me say to you, I [Jesus] am going away, and I will come to you. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

Luke 18:19
18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? none is good, except one, that is, God.

Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: THE LORD our God is one LORD:
It has to be said that there are many other Scriptural references that can also be quoted in support of the cult's views's regarding this subject, Scriptures that I shall for the sake of space refrain from typing out here, I only mention them to make you aware of their existence.

Although I studied with the Cults I also spent rather allot of time reading Scripture alone. It was during these personal studies that I began to have more and more difficulty in reconciling what I was being taught with what I was reading. Although there were scriptures that ‘appeared’ to support their views others began to come to my attention that certainly did not...
Genesis 1:26a
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...[Only God creates]

Genesis 3:22
22 Then the LORD God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever

Genesis 11:7
Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.
Without going into it too deeply, I shall try to explain how I have come to the conclusions that I hold to today.
  • Firstly, that The Holy Spirit is God.
    Acts 5:3-4
But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?
4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.
  • Secondly, that Jehovah is God.
    Exodus 6:3
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
Yes others may say Yahweh or whatever but most who know Scripture know who I am talking about...God almighty.

  • Thirdly, That the Word is God.
    John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
It maybe helpful here to place these three together to assist me in explaining just what took place to save us from the righteous judgement of God, which resulted in the ‘make-up’ of the Godhead we have today.

Acts 5:3-4 Holy Spirit
Exodus 6:3 Jehovah
John 1:1 The Word

At the time that the above situation prevailed, just as Haman before King Ahasuerus was highly exalted (Ester 3:1-2) so too was Satan highly exalted above his fellow's, who even walked in the very presence of God (Ezekiel 28). But just as Haman could not abide the presence of the Jews within the Medo-Persian Kingdom neither could Lucifer abide the presence of Mankind in the Kingdom of God. Mankind... who had then only just been created, and in the very image of God too!

Just as Balaam knew that the only way to destroy the Jews was to bring upon them the wrath of God by tempting them to break God's command (Numbers 31:16), so too was Satan's plan to destroy Mankind in like fashion...that being to cause them to break God's command and thus suffer the consequences.

Adam and Eve having received but one commandment, Satan immediately set about diverting all of his efforts into coercing them into breaking this one command...and thus to suffer the pronounced punishment for doing so which is death (Genesis 3:1-4).

Just as a ‘bent’ solicitor cannot imprison a righteous man without the good law of the land empowering him, neither can Satan destroy unless by deceit or temptation he causes a man to fall foul of God's righteous law and suffer his just punishment.

So, Mankind's having sinned corrupted himself and thus was not only cut-off from a loving relationship with his maker but his very nature had been corrupted and he now found himself not only unable to overcome sin but was a slave to him who he had been obedient to, that being Satan. So it appeared that Lucifer's/Satan's plan had succeeded in the destruction of Mankind.

However, God so loved us (John 3:16) that He had a plan to save mankind, a plan that cost Him dearly.
As the price for sin is eternal death, if He could find a Man who had never sinned, that Man could die to pay the price for all of Mankind's sins and having never sinned himself, the ‘law of sin and Death‘ pronounced by God would have no power over him and he would rise to eternal life!!
Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 5:19
For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.
So God looked for such a one, but none was to be found because...
Romans 3:23
all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, [Therefore all must die forever]
If it was Mankind that broke the law and the satisfying of that law is the death of the sinner then it goes without saying that only the death of a man will satisfy that law. So neither an animal nor a bird will suffice but it has to be a member of the family of Adam. But there was none to be found, no not one because...we all being sinners must each pay for our own sins. And our disembodied spirits will eventually be sentenced (Revelation 20:12) to an eternity in Hell where our fallen nature will no longer threaten God's perfect creation. An eternal quarantine, if you like for eternal spirits.
Hebrews 10:4-5
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, so is it that the death of a Man is required for the sin of a Man.

Now, regarding ‘The Trinity’ in the above text we find a clue what to the Godhead did to accomplish our salvation...a body have you prepared for me...A situation occurred that changed forever the union of the Godhead. The Word humbled Himself under the authority of Jehovah for our-sakes and emptied Himself to become one of us that He could become the payment for our sins. The Father and the Word entered into a Father and Son relationship.
Philippians 2:5-10
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [Born to Mary]
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;‘

John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Yes, ‘God the Word’ humbled Himself and was born into our family, the family of Mankind (and His name was and is Jesus), that He might bare the punishment for our sins upon Himself. Thus He fulfilled God's righteousness law by allowing judgement to be satisfied on the family of Mankind for the breaking of the law. As in every-way he was a man encumbered by this same vile, weak and perverse flesh but overcame it. And resisting the temptations of the god of this age he humbled Himself to the will of the Jehovah which was to pay for our sins.
But having never sinned Himself He was not guilty and so after paying for our sins He was justly raised to eternal life and so conquered death and him who had the power over death, the Devil (Satan - Lucifer). And now a fully glorified Man yet fully God He is not ashamed to called me His brother   (Hebrews 2:11-12).

Whilst on Earth the Jews were left in no doubt that Jesus was claiming to be God...so much so that they tried to stone Him for blasphemy.
John 5:18
This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Below we can see the effect that our salvation has had on the Godhead.

The Trinity
So, whilst Jesus walked this Earth in His mortal, sinful body some 2000 years ago, He could truly say that “No one is good but God only”(Luke 18:19). So although Jesus said “The Father is greater than I” whilst on Earth... He was at that time a man in fallen flesh thus His statement was true.

O' What an advantage it is when you have a relative in the local government or head office of your employment. Someone to mediate for you between you and the boss and to intercede on your behalf. Now, for the first time ever a relative, THE MAN JESUS CHRIST is seated besides the great GOD ALMIGHTY! Seated there besides the great Father as proof of payment for our sins. A receipt if you like that the payment of our sins has been met! If when we were enemies of God we were saved by His death how much more now shall we be blessed by His life (Romans 5:10) Him being seated besides the Father who loves Him and us who follow Him?
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
But the question is...do you know Him?
No one else can save you from your sins, either you will pay for them yourself and satisfy God's righteous law with your soul remaining in the quarantine of Hell or you can accept Christ's payment for your sin. The men Buddha and Mohammed can't pay for your sins, they shall have to pay for their own sins. The supposed ‘god’ Allah has no basis for the forgiveness of sin but the Koran states he will just forgive some others he will not, thus leaving you no sure and fixed confidence of salvation.
Acts 4:12
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Why? Because only Jesus has paid for your sins, anyone else who may have tried will have had only satisfied the law regarding their own sins and they shall remain in Hell.

Many have tried to explain to me ‘the Trinity’ and in many different ways. I have heard of some suggesting it is like an egg with the yoke, white and the shell all being one, with respect I find this unhelpful and confusing as many may find with my attempt below.

If I should say Manchester United was coming to play at Norwich, should I say...“Owen, Rooney, Neville, Anderson, Scholes etc were all coming to play Norwich”? Or would I simply announce that “Manchester United were coming to play Norwich City?” and then trust that you understood my meaning? Wouldn't you immediately understand that the one was made-up of the many?
When they played they would play as one. As one being or entity they would have same desire in all of their hearts...In the case of football that would be to simply to get the ball into the opponent's net while defending their own. All personal ambitions would be laid aside, the many would become one for the duration of the game. They would rejoice together as one when they scored and they would mourn together if they conceded a goal, in one spirit they would step out onto the pitch and as one body they would play.

The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit are one, with totally and completely one purpose and one desire in mind.
Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: THE LORD our God is one LORD:

John 14:8-11
8 Philip said to him, Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.
9 Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father?
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

John 17:21
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Isaiah 61:1-2
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is UPON ME; BECAUSE THE LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of THE LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

This is a prophecy regarding the promised then still to come Jewish Messiah [Anointed One], who we know as Jesus. The Messiah was the great hope of the Jews, they prayed and fasted for His coming and looked for Him always, He was the hope and desire of the whole Nation. Around 700 years ‘after’ the above Scripture was penned by the prophet Isaiah an adult Jesus walked into a Synagogue [kind of Jewish Church] in His home town of Nazareth, and stepped forward to speak...the following Scripture recorded in the Gospel of Luke is an account of this event.
Luke 4:17-21
17 And there was delivered unto him [Jesus] the book of the prophet Esaias [Isaiah]. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
In stating “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears”Jesus was declaring before all in attendance that He alone had fulfilled that which He had just read from the book of Isaiah written some 700 years earlier by the prophet of the same name. In doing so those present were left in no doubt that He, Jesus was claiming to be their long awaited Messiah...yet still they rejected Him. However it is important to note that which He had neglected to read from the prophecy and thus was not claiming to yet have fulfilled. As when looking more closely it becomes apparent that He had refrained from reading the second half of Isaiah 61:2 which reads...
Isaiah 61:2b
and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn
Jesus in His first Coming fulfilled only that part of the prophecy which He had read on that day in the Synagogue (Luke 4:17-21). It was a prophecy of the coming Messiah written some 700 years earlier by the prophet Isaiah. However we can be sure He will soon return as promised and fulfill the final part of that unfulfilled prophecy at His Second Coming, ‘The Day of the Lord’ a day of darkness, terror and horror to punish an evil and unrepentant perverse World for their sins. Yet in His mercy, not only did the Father send His only begotten Son to fulfill all the Law which we have failed to keep but also to lay down His life and pay for all the viles sins that we should have paid for, and being mortal we would have never rose again to life...for sin must be accounted for! And then He chose a people [The Church] to proclaim this free gift to the whole World before that terrible Day of The Lord.

Many will say...“A good and loving God could never throw me into an eternal Hell!” Go and ask a ‘Good and Loving’ Judge on Earth if he will show mercy to a child murderer or rapist when called to judge one, no...there will be no mercy shown. How much more will a perfect, Holy and righteous God judge a perverse and wicked people when they have rejected His payment for sin in sending His Son as a sacrifice. And more, that they have mocked, abused and even killed His prophets and Church called to proclaim this message of grace.

You may say “I haven't done anything that wicked” yet I know you have hated, lusted and deceived and if you should obtain immortality eventually there is nothing that you will not do unless your very nature, your very being has been changed. This can only take place when the Holy Spirit enters into the heart of a repentant sinner and their very being is ‘Born Again’ not of corruptible flesh but of a new and Holy spirit. God can not allow a mortal sinner to inherit eternity if He did what horrors would ensue? He made that choice long ago with Adam and Eve and He will not change His mind for you or for me.
Genesis 3:22 + 24
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever”

Genesis 3:24
He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Imagine if you will, a relative whom you dearly care for is coming to lodge with you and your family, even amongst those who you love...your children and spouse. However to your horror you find that when he arrives he is full of fleas, boils seep out horrible fluids and lice crawl all over his skin. You can clearly see his pain and discomfort. As you contemplate what action to take to your alarm you witness him teaching your children vile words and to admire that which is base. At night he watches X-rated movies putting things into the mind of your spouse...things that are not convenient nor should be spoken of let-alone acted upon. In your love for your relative you offer him a bath and purchase expensive treatments even suffering loss paying for private and costly medical care. However whilst trying to gently point out his harmful behaviour, to your astonishment he takes offence and in his fury and raging self righteousness he declares through clenched teeth that there nothing wrong with him and further, that his morals are to be admired!

Knowing that in but a short time your whole family will contract the same vile ailments as your relative, you know that you have to act to save them from such a horrible fate. And further, that if you fail to act it is a surety that his moral behaviour will certainly debase you and your family's morals with everlasting consequences as ‘bad company corrupts good morals’ (1 Corinthians 15:33). So tell me...if he continues to deny his vile state and heinous affections...even glorying in them, how long will you hold out the hand of grace? Surely your love for those who are yours will force your hand? Yes, and for their sakes you will act decisively and cast him out. How much more then will a loving, righteous and Holy God cast out those who refuse to acknowledge their wicked and fallen state? Sin is infectious and God loves those who are His and will not stand by and allow His own children to suffer forever, sin will not enter eternity! In either case all that needs is repentance and to turn to your benefactor who is gracious and longs to heal and save.

God holds out His hand of grace to a sick and perverse World. He has paid dearly for our cure and has sent out a people to proclaim this grace that has an end. Do not be deceived! He has set a day when He will cast all those who hold on to their self righteousness and deny their fallen state into an everlasting quarantine. And the Scriptures of truth declare that ‘All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23). Therefore those who are found in life or in death [in Hades] to have held onto this terrible disease called sin and refused to be healed, He will cast into a place where they can never again infect those who have broken free and have turned to Him for healing and righteousness. Yes, He will cast them into an eternal Hell where the desires they cleaved to will torment them forever, never being satisfied.
Acts 17:31-32
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed [Jesus]; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.
Yes it is hard at times being a Christian. Living in this fallen flesh with it's perverse debasing desires...continually tempted by the accuser and hated and mocked by the World. But in a little while it shall be over and these current troubles shall not be remembered for the joy that is to come. Looking back I remember how I so hated school and the homework given and so neglected them for activities that were far more pleasurable. ‘O’ what regret when I applied for my first job, only then did I realise the fool that I had been and the qualifications required to obtain decent and fulfilling work. Then everything looked so different and all those worthless activities meant absolutely nothing to me. So shall it be when a person is aware that they are taking their very last few breaths in this short life and are about to step into eternity. And as their eyes start to fail and dim only then will some realise, far too late that all the base pleasures of this life count for absolutely nothing...just as their eternity begins.
Isaiah 65:17
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
